not entirely true. I've stand-developed in diafine part a alone for a long time - 30 minutes to an hour. b part is not even necessary. a lot of fog though when you stand develop. You can develop in part a as a regular developer too, but times are not practical.
Also shadow detail that can't be recorded on film, cannot be developed.
At 1600 Tri-X can't record deep shadows. It doesn't matter how much you develop it, you'll only be pushing some midtones and highlights up in density. Missing shadow detail is missing shadow detail. Longer development also means more fog, ESPECIALLY with a foggy developer like Diafine.
Don't develop old film in Diafine.
